This page includes a history of the data set, repairs, upgrades and problems that have occurred over the life of the network.

The final fabrication form of the Piconet was designed and conceived of in the Winter of 1997/8.  The prototype portable raingauge base was constructed in the Spring of 1998 and tested on the roof of Sarkey's Energy Center throughout the Summer and Fall.  It fared fairly well and the remaining gauges were constructed in the Winter of 1998 (with the aid of Walter Albrecht) using what was learned from the weaknesses seen in the test mount.

The initial 15 gauges were deployed on December 28th, 1998 in an unused wheat field at the south end of the Agricultural Research Center on the western side of Chickasha Oklahoma. This wheat field was used through May of 1999 (when the summer crop was planted).  The field was plowed under in April (see the readme files) and the gauges were moved then replace.  Not all gauges were properly balanced for about a week or two- and a precipitation event was polluted by this.

After this data set was completed (by necessity) the network was reconfigured so that stations 1-9 were located near the ARS building with separation distances of only about a meter for calibration . Stations 10 & 11 were co-located with the Chickasha Mesonet site. Stations 12 & 13 were co-located with the micronet site in Chickasha.  Stations 14 & 15 were co-located with the Mesonet site south of town. Station 16 was left in a cow pasture testing for the effects of cows on raingauges (the results were not good).

In August of 1999, the cow gauge (#16) and the Chickasha micronet gauges were brought to the ARS building.   In October 1999, a TAO buoy met station with siphon raingauge was installed and the mesonet co-located stations were all pulled into the cluster to continue the calibration (not much rain fell over the summer and early fall).

They (as of November 1999) continue to wait for the little rain that is falling in a tight cluster near the ARS buildling.  To see what we plan in the future- check up on our Schedule page...
